Pay-by-phone parking meters in Silver Spring

On May 20, 2011, in Uncategorized, by Jimmy Obomsawin

Walking around town last weekend I discovered that the pay-by-phone system that the county has been testing in Bethesda is now up and running in most of downtown Silver Spring. This was sooner than their planned rollout of “this summer”. While they charge a convenience fee of 35 cents per session, you get some benefits:

  • No change to carry
  • Get notified when your time is running out
  • Extend or start you time without visiting your car (useful for paying for parking without even getting out of bed in the morning, though unfortunately you still do need to wake up)
  • Don’t pay for parking time you don’t use if your plans change

The service is run by ParkNOW!, who allows payment using a phone call, text message, mobile web, or by using their iPhone or Android app.

This new system is optional, so you may continue to pay using coins if you wish.

In other parking news the garage at The Galaxy Apartments will hopefully be open in the fall, increasing the public parking on that land from 57 (the now closed King Street Lot) to 160 public parking spaces not counting private spaces for Galaxy and (some) Aurora owners. In green parking news, The Galaxy is advertising access to electric car charging stations, which I assume will only be available to residents.
