Where is Our Public Square? [UPDATED]

Silver Spring Action 2010.pdf

Do you think there is a lack of public space in Downtown Silver Spring? What exactly is public space? Would you like to see more greenery? Would you like to see a designated place for children to play?

All of these questions will be part of the "party with a purpose" taking place Wednesday night, organized by IMPACT Silver Spring for residents to discuss among themselves what we want the open spaces in Silver Spring to look and feel like.

If you want to help shape the future, this is event is a great place to start!

For more information, check out this terrific blog post: Silver Spring Speaks

*The event is at the Crowne Plaze (8781 Georgia Avenue), 7pm

Update: Although it's not required, you can RSVP on Facebook here.

New Traffic Signals on Georgia Ave

The Washington Post headline says it all: "New traffic signal coming in Silver Spring"

The good news: "The program, scheduled for completion in the summer of 2011, will upgrade signals between East-West Highway and Wayne Avenue. In addition to rebuilding the signals and installing pedestrian countdowns, the work includes upgrading the sidewalk ramps and the nearby street lighting."

Washingtonian's "Best of Silver Spring"

Washingtonian Magazine is out with it's "Best of Silver Spring" list, available only in it's February print addition-- but a Silver Spring neighbor was kind enough to put the list online here.

The nearby businesses that made the list: Crisfield Restaurant, Moorenko's, Jackie's, Vicino, Hanagan's Auto Body, Oriental East, Veridian Apartments and 1200 East-West Highway

Your Thoughts: Green Space in Silver Spring

green.jpg

Montgomery County planners want to hear from you as they work on the Green Space Guidelines for the Silver Spring Central Business District. Please join them at a community meeting on Wednesday, January 27 to have a voice in a new, "green" Silver Spring.

The Green Space Guidelines will provide recommendations to add more green space and public gathering places to downtown Silver Spring. The plan will identify potential sites that could provide large green public spaces and specify design guidelines for how to develop them. Through it, planners will recommend ways to achieve significant green spaces in Silver Spring that vary in size, character, and use to help fulfill the Sector Plan’s vision for a green downtown.

Montgomery County Satisfaction Survey

survey.jpg

Montgomery County recently released the results of a survey with the goal of determining the mood, behavior and makeup of its residents. The entire report can be read here, but I've highlighted some interesting parts of the county-wide survey -- which was conducted in September with responses from approximately 1,000 residents:

Overall

  • 89% say Montgomery County is an excellent/good place to live
  • 63% feel an excellent/good sense of community

On Safety

  • 70% feel safe in their neighborhood after dark
  • 48% feel safe in "Montgomery County's downtown areas after dark"

On Transportation

During a typical week, how do you commute to work? (Check all that apply):

  • 66% drive solo
  • 24% take public transportation
  • 14% car pool
  • 11% telecommute
  • 8% walk
  • 5% have home based businesses
  • 4% take bicycle

When asked about "bus or transit" services, 68% rate them as excellent/good, though I wonder if that will drop in 2010 due to ongoing service problems with WMATA. And interestingly enough, 43% say they never rode a Metrobus or Ride On bus within Montgomery County in 2010, with an additional 20% claiming to have ridden only "once or twice in the last year."

It should be noted that the survey did not ask about frequency of Metrorail use, only Metrobus/Ride On. But the survey shows that the perception of mass transit services is likely better than those services really are, considering 68% approve of the state of mass transit while 63% have had fewer than two trips on Metrobus/Ride On during the last year and only 24% commuting to work on public transportation. There are a few pieces of data missing, but I believe a real disconnect exists among county residents.

On average, about how long does it take you to travel to work?

  • 51% say it takes longer than 31 minutes
  • 9% more than an hour

Pedestrian Safety?

  • 57% believe the county is not doing a good job on the issue of pedestrian safety

Civic Engagement

Only 45% of residents have volunteered their time in Montgomery County during the last year, with 20% only doing so once or twice. While the survey doesn't account for volunteering in other jurisdictions, it does show that many among us are not taking advantage of the many meaningful opportunities to volunteer within our own community.

The survey also shows that 73% of residents never attended a public meeting, which is a great reason for everyone to attend the next SSSNA meeting on February 4th.

It's also worth noting that 19% of respondents "get most or a lot" of their local news from civic or homeowner association newsletters or listervs.

Housing

When asked "how important, if at all" is it for Montgomery County to address the issue of affordable housing, 70% said it is important. That makes sense, given the fact that only 23% of residents say affordable housing is available in the county.

  • 28% rent their home
  • 37% live in a multifamily dwelling (apartment or condominium)

Respondents' Demographics

  • 53% work in Montgomery County
  • 27% were not “employed for pay” (when the survey was taken in September)
  • A plurality (43%) have lived in Montgomery County for more than 20 years
  • 33% were not born in the United States
  • 5% of respondents live in the 20910 zip code
  • 55% of households earn less than $100,000
  • 5% earn more than $300,000

Snow : Keeping Sidewalks Clear

SS snow

A friendly reminder from Montgomery County about our the snow removal responsibilities for our buildings:

COMMUNITY BROADCAST ANNOUNCMENT

As snowfall is predicted for the upcoming weekend, businesses and homeowners are being asked to make every effort to keep walkways and business entrances clear of snow throughout the snow event. Montgomery County Law requires businesses and homeowners to shovel public sidewalks and curb ramps in front of their properties within 24 hours of a snowfall but a little extra effort during the snowfall makes it possible for everyone to use the public sidewalk and curb ramps, especially during this holiday season.

Remember that sidewalks and curb ramps require a 36” width path, to allow people who use walkers, wheelchairs, baby strollers, rolling suit cases or briefcases etc. to travel safely,
particularly when walkways are slippery or wet.

Mayorga To Close

Mayorga Coffee

If you haven't heard the sad news by now, Mayorga Coffee Factory will be closing its doors at the end of the year. Many of us can remember moving to South Silver Spring due in part to our buildings' advertising the proximity to the coffee shop and other wonderful businesses in the area. Mayorga was a great place to surf the web, read the newspaper, hold meetings, and yes, even drink coffee. It was because of Mayorga's prominence in our community that we held our very first social event at Mayorga in July 2007.

But keep in mind that there are other independently owned coffee shops within walking distance and that our patronage is equally important to them: Tiramisu Bakery CafeHighland Coffee and Kefa Cafe

For more information about Mayorga's shuttering, here is the latest Gazette article and here is the public announcement from Martin Mayorga.

Our Own Community Garden?

Community Garden

Montgomery County's chief horticulturalist says that his department is actively looking at creating a community garden in South Silver Spring and that negotiations are underway to use the vacant plot of land that borders Eastern Avenue and King Street (see map) David Vismara tells me that the Parks Department is currently working to obtain a lease with the land owner, but that everything is still at a preliminary stage. That said, he hopes the site will become available in the late spring or early summer of 2010.

You might recall that Vismara and County Councilmember Valerie Ervin attended an SSSNA meeting in March 2009 (video) to present their vision for community gardens in our community.

Despite some false starts, let's remain optimistic that this garden plan will flourish!
