Where is Our Public Square? [UPDATED]

Silver Spring Action 2010.pdf

Do you think there is a lack of public space in Downtown Silver Spring? What exactly is public space? Would you like to see more greenery? Would you like to see a designated place for children to play?

All of these questions will be part of the "party with a purpose" taking place Wednesday night, organized by IMPACT Silver Spring for residents to discuss among themselves what we want the open spaces in Silver Spring to look and feel like.

If you want to help shape the future, this is event is a great place to start!

Meeting with Police about weekend noise in Kennett St. Garage

Date & Time:
Mar 2 2010 - 7:00pm
Location:
8045 Social Room
Kennett Street Garage

Neighbors,

Many of us have been disturbed regularly since last summer by loud partying in the Kennett Street County Garage Friday and Saturday nights (actually early Sat. and Sun. morning) from about 3:00am to 4:00am after the Gallery on East West closes. Many of us have called the police who, when they arrived, have done what was needed. Partying, horn beeping contests, car alarm triggering, urinating, shouting--often for more than an hour before the police arrive. We've been very patient but are now out of patience. As a first step, we have arranged an open meeting next Tuesday, March 2, with Lt. Liquorie of the County Police. He is aware of our problem and seems eager to work with us to stop a growing problem and danger. EVERYONE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS INVITED. The meeting is at 7:00 pm in the Social Room of 8045 Newell St. If you are a non-resident, please come around to the Newell St. entrance to the left of the condo garage entrance. This is the first promising sign from "authorities" we have seen; let's take advantage of it.

Thanks.
Maynard Mack (8045 Newell St.)

Although not required, you may RSVP on Facebook.

Montgomery County to apply for access to Google gigabit fiber

Fiber optics

If you've been following Google's latest projects, you likely know that they have announce plans to bring gigabit internet speeds to consumers in select markets. Montgomery County is preparing their application to be included in the trial phase. Google will be offering speeds of about 1,000 megabits while most ISPs in our area are offering speeds of 3 to 6 megabits, or 12 megabits for a premium price. Google's intent is to see what becomes possible when users and developers have access to what may feel like unlimited speeds.

Google's pricing has yet to be announced and if it is offered in Montgomery county we don't know what parts of the county will be offered the service.

This is a welcome announcement considering internet options in downtown Silver Spring are slow, expensive, and unreliable compared to what I have seen elsewhere. It could be a feature that attracts more businesses and residents to the county.

The county is encouraging residents to nominate us for inclusion in the trial by March 26.

New Traffic Signals on Georgia Ave

stoplights.JPG

The Washington Post headline says it all: "New traffic signal coming in Silver Spring"

The good news: "The program, scheduled for completion in the summer of 2011, will upgrade signals between East-West Highway and Wayne Avenue. In addition to rebuilding the signals and installing pedestrian countdowns, the work includes upgrading the sidewalk ramps and the nearby street lighting."

Washingtonian Magazine is out with it's "Best of Silver Spring" list, available only in it's February print addition-- but a Silver Spring neighbor was kind enough to put the list online here.

The nearby businesses that made the list: Crisfield Restaurant, Moorenko's, Jackie's, Vicino, Hanagan's Auto Body, Oriental East, Veridian Apartments and 1200 East-West Highway

Your Thoughts: Green Space in Silver Spring

green.jpg

Montgomery County planners want to hear from you as they work on the Green Space Guidelines for the Silver Spring Central Business District. Please join them at a community meeting on Wednesday, January 27 to have a voice in a new, "green" Silver Spring.

The Green Space Guidelines will provide recommendations to add more green space and public gathering places to downtown Silver Spring. The plan will identify potential sites that could provide large green public spaces and specify design guidelines for how to develop them. Through it, planners will recommend ways to achieve significant green spaces in Silver Spring that vary in size, character, and use to help fulfill the Sector Plan’s vision for a green downtown.

Montgomery County Satisfaction Survey

survey.jpg

Montgomery County recently released the results of a survey with the goal of determining the mood, behavior and makeup of its residents. The entire report can be read here, but I've highlighted some interesting parts of the county-wide survey -- which was conducted in September with responses from approximately 1,000 residents:

Overall

  • 89% say Montgomery County is an excellent/good place to live
  • 63% feel an excellent/good sense of community

On Safety

  • 70% feel safe in their neighborhood after dark
  • 48% feel safe in "Montgomery County's downtown areas after dark"

On Transportation

During a typical week, how do you commute to work? (Check all that apply):

  • 66% drive solo
  • 24% take public transportation
  • 14% car pool
  • 11% telecommute
  • 8% walk
  • 5% have home based businesses
  • 4% take bicycle

When asked about "bus or transit" services, 68% rate them as excellent/good, though I wonder if that will drop in 2010 due to ongoing service problems with WMATA. And interestingly enough, 43% say they never rode a Metrobus or Ride On bus within Montgomery County in 2010, with an additional 20% claiming to have ridden only "once or twice in the last year."

It should be noted that the survey did not ask about frequency of Metrorail use, only Metrobus/Ride On. But the survey shows that the perception of mass transit services is likely better than those services really are, considering 68% approve of the state of mass transit while 63% have had fewer than two trips on Metrobus/Ride On during the last year and only 24% commuting to work on public transportation. There are a few pieces of data missing, but I believe a real disconnect exists among county residents.

On average, about how long does it take you to travel to work?

  • 51% say it takes longer than 31 minutes
  • 9% more than an hour

Pedestrian Safety?

  • 57% believe the county is not doing a good job on the issue of pedestrian safety

Civic Engagement

Only 45% of residents have volunteered their time in Montgomery County during the last year, with 20% only doing so once or twice. While the survey doesn't account for volunteering in other jurisdictions, it does show that many among us are not taking advantage of the many meaningful opportunities to volunteer within our own community.

The survey also shows that 73% of residents never attended a public meeting, which is a great reason for everyone to attend the next SSSNA meeting on February 4th.

It's also worth noting that 19% of respondents "get most or a lot" of their local news from civic or homeowner association newsletters or listervs.

Housing

When asked "how important, if at all" is it for Montgomery County to address the issue of affordable housing, 70% said it is important. That makes sense, given the fact that only 23% of residents say affordable housing is available in the county.

  • 28% rent their home
  • 37% live in a multifamily dwelling (apartment or condominium)

Respondents' Demographics

  • 53% work in Montgomery County
  • 27% were not “employed for pay” (when the survey was taken in September)
  • A plurality (43%) have lived in Montgomery County for more than 20 years
  • 33% were not born in the United States
  • 5% of respondents live in the 20910 zip code
  • 55% of households earn less than $100,000
  • 5% earn more than $300,000

Next SSSNA Meeting [UPDATED]

Date & Time:
Feb 4 2010 - 7:30pm
Location:
Eastern Village Cohousing (Social Room) 7981 Eastern Ave Silver Spring MD 20910
Metro logo

Are you aware that the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) will likely be making drastic cuts to service and/or increasing fees to use public transit, and do you want to know what we can do to try and improve our public transportation system?

Have you walked around the neighborhood and accidentally stepped in... dog mess?

Did you know that Jackie's Restaurant has a new chef and menu and wants to share their delicious new food with the community?

And lastly, are you interested in getting more involved in SSSNA? We are holding elections for our officers!

All of these questions will be answered at the next SSSNA meeting on Thursday February 4th at 7:30pm.

Agenda

  1. Elections - We are holding elections for our executive board, with all current officers seeking reelection: president (Evan Glass), vice president (David Fogel), treasurer (John Murphy) and secretary (Nellie Dickens). If you are interested in running for one of these positions, please email Jason Gedeik at jged...@hotmail.com . Nominations will also be taken at the meeting. Please note that we have many other positions and opportunities for those interested in becoming more involved, such as chairs of our social committee, safety committee, redevelopment committee and others.
  2. Pet Etiquette - Due to the recent chatter about pet owners not living up to their responsibilities, we will be having a short discussion with Jaime Deason, owner of Fetch Petcare of Silver Spring, and Jessica Simon, owner of Living Ruff pet store, to hear about the services they provide for pet owners and learn about the best ways to help keep our sidewalks clean.
  3. Transit - Hans Reimer, Vice President of Action Committee for Transit, will facilitate a conversation about our transportation woes, what we can expect with Metrorail and Metrobus service, and how we as citizens can help improve the situation.
  4. Future SSSNA Events - If you have ideas about what we can do to improve the community -- aesthetically, socially, volunteerism -- bring your ideas and suggestions!

And to reiterate, Jackie's Restaurant will be donating some food to share with the community she loves. Yum!

Please save the date and when we'll send an update when we finalize the location.

The meeting will be held in the Eastern Village Cohousing social room at 7981 Eastern Avenue.

Evan Glass
