1200 Blair Mill Road construction about to begin

The lot at 1200 Blair Mill Road has been seeing activity in recent days. Surveyors have been spotted, and the fence has been removed. However, we have been told that the project is being scaled down because of increased costs in construction. We don't know if that means the number of units, quality of units, facade, etc. We'll update you if we find anything else out. Of course, if you know something we don't, please reply to this post.

Cultural Arts Center

As I am sure many of you are aware, the new Cultural Arts Center at Montgomery College seems to have begun construction in the past couple of weeks.  I snapped up this photo this afternoon. One eye on the camera, the other eye on oncoming traffic on 410. You can see a larger image by clicking the photo in the link above.

Email Subscriptions / Sharing

Over the past several months, the South Silver Spring Neighborhood Association website has been growing in readership and in features. Today we have two new features to announce:

First, a new feature to make reading our blog easier: for those of you who do not use RSS feeds, you now have the option to subscribe to email updates.

  1. click the "Subscribe" link on the navigation bar on top of the page
  2. enter your email address.
  3. check your email, as you will need to confirm your address before we sign you up

Every morning, if there are posts, a copy will be sent to your email. But remember to come back to the website to read and make comments.

Second, we have added a new feature to make sharing posts easier. At the bottom of each post is a link that says "Share This". Clicking it will drop down a box that lets you choose how to share it: email, digg, Technorati, etc.)

Experiment with these new features and let us know what you think!

Civic Center Forum

As you may know, there has been a lot of debate about how to proceed with the Silver Spring Civic Center. The contentious issue is what to do with the open space, which is currently occupied by the green turf. Part of that area is slated to be turned into an ice rink, with a majority of it turned into an open plaza with seating areas. There is also some natural grass on the perimeter of the design.

Nine different civic organizations are organizing a walking tour and an open forum next Saturday, May 5, from 1:00 - 3:00p to hear about the proposal from all citizens.

As a member of one of the sponsor organizations, I have made my opinion on the issue clear: there are thousands of new residents of Silver Spring who were never able to voice their opinion during the planning stages more than seven years ago. Times have changed, people have learned to love the turf, and their opinions need to be heard. I believe there is room for compromise between what is a classically beautiful town center design and the modern demand for more green space.

If you are interested in learning about the design from a walking tour and/or the forum discussion, below is the schedule.

I will certainly be there. If you feel like walking over, let me know.

May 5th Forum
1:00 -1:20 Meet on the turf, see the design and layout
1:20-1:30 Walk to Round House Black Box Theater 8641 Colesville Road, Silver Spring
1:30-2:00 Panel discussion
2:00-3:00 Small group discussions
