An Evening of Cultural Exchange!
When: Thursday, March 22nd 6:30 – 8:30pm
Cost: $5
This evening will highlight the culture of the Jewish and Muslim traditions, including food (from Taste of Morocco!) highlighting shared traditions from Arab and Jewish kitchens, particularly in areas where Arab and Jew have long lived side by side such as the North African cities of Fez, Rabat and Tunis. There will also be Jewish and Muslim storytelling, dancing and music.
The Evenings Agenda:
Belly Dancing! 7-7:10pm
Although commonly perceived as a dance of seduction – Middle Eastern dance (often known as “bellydance”) is actually a dance of celebration with roots founded in the cultures of North Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey. This dance form, rich in tradition and cultural heritage is performed by people of all ages, men and women, at festivals, community gatherings, and celebrations. Amara is a Middle Eastern dance artist and instructor. She performs at private parties, community and corporate
events, and at area schools and teaches weekly Middle Eastern dance classes in Gaithersburg and in Rockville. www.amaraofthemoon.com
Learn Israeli Dances! 7:20 – 7:40
Join hands and dance to the rhythms of traditional Israeli music as we learn together dances such as Zemer Atik and Ma Navu!
Shlemiel’s, Shlimazel’s and Shadows! 7:50 – 8:10pm
Experience the magic of both Yiddish tales and shadow puppetry with Daniel Barash of The Shadow Puppet Workshop. Shadow Puppetry is an Asian-inspired performance art in which the shadows of two-dimensional rod puppets are cast onto a lit screen to other-worldly effect. For this presentation, audience members will see Yiddish tales brought to life using the age-old art of shadow puppetry. See you in the land of shadows! www.shadowpuppetworkshop.com
Apples to Eden! 8:10 – 8:20
In this story, artist and poet Karim Chaibi present how a king discovers with the help of cartographers that Eden actually lies within his own kingdom and his journey as he sets out to explore it with interesting twists but sorry results.
